Kiki Hood
Soprano Kiki Hood is a Seattle
native from a musical family. She started out singing
in the elementary school choir in fourth grade, singing
alto because she could hear harmony. In fifth grade,
she shifted to the cello, and stayed with it through high
school, at which time she went back to singing and took
up the recorder. She has studied music in Seattle's community
colleges, notably voice with Carol Sams and theory and
conducting with Roupen Shakarian.
Kiki has sung in the Pacific
Northwest Chamber Chorus, under the direction of Dr.
Joan Conlin and Steven Demorest, as well as its smaller
unit, Canzonetta; she has also sung with The
Esoterics, and currently sings with the Seattle
Chamber Singers, with George Shangrow.
As a soloist, she has performed
part of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater at First Presbyterian
Church and in several concerts and recitals at Pilgrim
Congregational Church, featuring songs by local composers
Carol Sams and Gloria Wilson Swisher, in addition to other
opera and art song repertoire. On the stage, Kiki has
appeared in the title role of Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience
and as Val in Carol Sam's Daddy's Money. She
has also been the soloist in Mozart's Requiem
and Handel's Messiah. Her heart remains
with vocal chamber music, though, having been a member
of the mixed voice quartet Tobermory, and currently a
member of The Sisters.
Although her musical preferences
tend to weigh in with early and baroque music, her tastes
are exceedingly broad, with special interest in music
of the twentieth century. As assistant music director
of University Christian Church, she enjoys exploring all
kinds of music with her choir and a congregation that
enjoys variety.
